We ask residents for a commitment to stay six months and the maximum stay is two years. Residents must maintain a source of income and pay subsidized rent monthly. Finally, all residents who are experiencing mental health problems or have abused drugs or alcohol must seek and stay in treatment. House of Ruth Maryland’s Chatline is a confidential lifeline to victims in need. The Chatline is an alternative way to seek support for those experiencing IPV who may not have access or the ability to call the 24/7 Crisis Hotline. Through the Chatline, Advocates can help with the same services as the Crisis Hotline, except Rapid Rehousing and Emergency Shelter.

House of Ruth’s Mission & History

The new shelter has a holistic health and wellness program, including an on-site health clinic staffed by the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. House of Ruth helps people living with HIV/AIDS and their families find housing and supportive services. If you are in need of assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. The mission of House of Ruth is to help women, children and families in greatest need and with very limited resources build safe, stable lives and achieve their highest potential. In response to historical and present systems of oppression, our programs primarily serve women, Black communities and communities of color.

Providing Safe Housing for Nearly 50 Years

We understand that many victims need additional tools, skills, and resources if they are to become self-sufficient and live free of violence. Making good decisions about what is in their family’s best interest is a first step. But, developing and applying the skills and knowledge to become psychologically and financially independent is the crucial next one. The center is a licensed childcare center for children ages 6 weeks – 5 years old.

Counseling

Their willingness to share their stories of pain, determination, and triumph help us to remember how important the work we're doing is...and how to shape our programs to best fit the needs and aspirations of survivors. Providing individual counseling to those who have experienced domestic or intimate partner violence. Parents and children equipped with trauma-informed childcare through Kidspace. Changing attitudes and beliefs of intimate partner violence through legislative and social change. Intimate partner violence can happen to anyone regardless of race, age, sexual orientation, religion, ability or gender, and can take many forms, including physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional, economic, and psychological abuse. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is violence by a spouse or partner in an intimate relationship against the other spouse or partner.

We recognize that instances of discrimination and harassment are both specific and representative of systemic issues. Our programs are constantly evolving as we aim to provide the most compassionate, comprehensive, and cutting edge services to support our program participants. We’re working to empower women, children, and families to heal from trauma, abuse, and housing instability.

Your donations make a life-changing difference in the lives of women who may have never known kindness and respect until they came to House of Ruth. Government funding to help these women is scarce, and we rely heavily on private support to fund our residential programs. House of Ruth began as a shelter for women experiencing houselessness in 1976; at that time, it was the only shelter dedicated to serving women in D.C. It quickly became clear that many women were in need of more than just a meal and a bed. LAHR provides advocacy with restraining orders along with support for families who have open court cases, most of which are with the Department of Children Services. Our Case Managers advocate for the family on all levels as well as attend all court appearances to offer stability and support.

House of Ruth Maryland was founded in May of 1977 by a coalition of women’s organizations, religious groups, service providers, and elected officials to provide a safe haven for victims of domestic violence and their children. In November of 1977 we opened Baltimore’s first crisis shelter for these victims in a row house on North Calvert Street. The shelter was staffed by one paid staffed person and a voluntary Board of Directors. The shelter has twenty-three bright spacious, private bedrooms with baths and a large dining room and kitchen.

We are a comprehensive domestic violence agency based in Southern CA; servicing the eastern Los Angeles and western San Bernardino counties. London Marathon 2024: All results and times as women's-only world record broken - complete list

Without a home the only thing you’d be thinking about is finding a home. Women and children provided with safe and stable housing through our 13 housing programs. We are here to help survivors of domestic violence and houselessness.

The Domestic Violence Support Center

During this phase, we work intensively in partnership with each woman to assist her in securing income and housing. Also, we support women in utilizing the shelter’s rich offering of tools and services to work through trauma, begin to plan for self-sufficiency, and expand her capacity to grow through involvement in enrichment and wellness programs. Our services include enriched housing for families and single women, trauma-informed child development, and free counseling to anyone, regardless of gender, who is a survivor of trauma and abuse. For over 40 years, House of Ruth has provided safe and stable housing to women, children and families in the DC area who have experienced houselessness and abuse. House of Ruth Maryland is one of the nation’s leading intimate partner violence centers, helping thousands of battered women and their children find the safety and security that so many of us take for granted.

Martha‘s Table exists because every child, regardless of zip code, should have the opportunity to thrive. For over 40 years, the organization has been working to increase access to quality education, health and wellness resources, and family supports. The length of time a woman or family can live in shelter is based upon her individual needs and goals. We encourage battered women to use time at the beginning of their stay as respite, rest and sanctuary. This is the time that battered women use to look back and forward and to decide the best next course of action. Women who choose to remain in shelter beyond this period will enter the “short-term transitional” phase of the program.

When a family moves on to permanent housing, we assist in securing mental health support close to where they are living. As years went, on we came to understand the variety of needs accompanying houselessness and domestic violence. Today, we operate 15 programs across the District of Columbia, including housing, counseling, and child development services. Our 84-bed shelter is a safe, supportive, temporary refuge for victims of intimate partner violence and their children who are in immediate danger or at risk of homicide. We help women living in shelter begin recovery from the trauma of their partner’s violence and to rebuild their lives.

Staff is on-site around the clock to assist the women and ensure their safety while creating a warm, nurturing environment. LAHR provides onsite individual and group counseling for children and their parents as additional support. Our mental health staff includes therapists who specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Treatment, which is successful in assisting the client in changing behaviors. Our child therapists specialize in children’s mental health issues, which the children in our shelters desperately need. When a family has mental health needs beyond our available staffing time, we refer the family to agencies that specialize in mental health treatment.

Dr. Veronica Maz was a Georgetown University professor when she founded House of Ruth. She realized that, while there were shelters for men in D.C., there were no shelters for women at the time. She went on to found not only House of Ruth, but Martha’s Table and SOME (So Others Might Eat).

House of Ruth offers comprehensive services and housing for women and children. Our services range from supportive housing for families and single women in crisis, to a therapeutic child and family development center, and free counseling services to anyone who has experienced domestic violence. Join our community of donors and help us support women as they end the cycle of domestic violence.

House of Ruth celebrates 40 years of service to the women, children and families in the D.C. Kidspace is rated a “High Quality” child development center (the highest rating available) by D.C.’s Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE). House of Ruth’s President & CEO, Sandra L. Jackson, D. Min., M.S.W., LICSW, LCSW-C, is awarded Georgetown University’s 2020 “John Thompson Jr. Legacy of a Dream Award” for her outstanding leadership, particularly in regards to her vision for House of Ruth’s new Kidspace child and family development center in Ward 7. The Best Bug Spray and Bug Repellent for 2023

bug spray for house

Raid is one of the most well-known bug sprays on the market and their 14oz aerosol spray is very effective at killing paper- and yellow jacket wasps, hornets, mud daubers, and bees on contact inside your home. It is also ideal for killing stinging insects outside your home and the high-powered spray makes it very easy to target insects that nest in hard to reach areas. As this bug spray is formulated by professional exterminators who have tried and tested it, you can be confident that this fast-acting and long-lasting 16-ounce pump-action spray will kill the bugs 100% dead. Also, if you use a chemically-based bug spray, and have children and pets, the spray needs to be left to dry on surfaces before you can allow children and pets back into the room. But Cutter’s dry formula means it’s not as oily as regular DEET spray.

On two of those occasions, I had to undergo a four-week course of the antibiotic doxycycline, which is awful in its own right. Seeing what this disease is capable of is a sobering experience; I can’t stress enough how important it is to protect yourself against tick bites. Ranger Ready offers pump- and trigger-spray bottles in a variety of scents, as well as bulk refill bags to reduce waste (and lower your costs).

Individuals interested in more environmentally-friendly products may wonder about organic bug sprays. The products use natural, plant-based ingredients including essential oils, lemongrass and citronella while skipping out on DEET, alcohol and other potentially harsh chemicals. Cutter’s insect repellent is a great choice for anyone looking for an unscented bug spray. It includes 10% DEET— repelling mosquitoes, deer ticks, gnats, biting flies, no-see-ums, chiggers and fleas, according to the company. This product also protects against insects that may carry the chikungunya, Zika, dengue and West Nile viruses. IR3535 is the active ingredient found in some DEET-free bug repellents.

Wondercide Flea & Tick Spray

Silicone dioxide is minimally toxic to most mammals, though you should still avoid getting it on yourself or pets directly. The great thing about insecticide dusts like CimeXa is that they can last up to 10 years if properly applied in areas with low-moisture conditions. For instance, a gel bait formulated for cockroaches is unlikely to attract ants. You have to be sure the bait you are putting out will work for all the insect pests in your home.

Since rely on pheromone trails and "follow the leader," disrupting this parade can end your infestation. Your garbage is a bug's treasure, and securing it is one of the best ways to keep them from accessing it. Since bugs are attracted to almost all food sources in your home or out, removing garbage as soon as it's full is another must. For large outdoor bins, just clean them with the hose, sponge, and some dish soap. After rinsing, turn them upside down to dry and keep a portion elevated for air flow. For cleaning inside trash bins, some cleaning spray should do just fine.

OFF! Botanicals Insect Repellent

If you don’t want to deal with the second cap, it can be discarded. I live in New Hampshire, and in the past 15 years, I have been treated for Lyme five times. I was lucky to spot it by its telltale bull’s-eye rash (not everyone does).

Efficacy tests are ongoing, but both the rosemary and lemongrass formulas have a fairly mild scent and don't leave behind an oily residue. If you have a large yard that's often the scene of cookouts and games of capture the flag, you're best off creating a bug-free zone. This aggressive solution from Cutter is formulated to not just repel mosquitoes and other pests, but to kill them dead, using the EPA-registered insecticide lambda-cyhalothrin. While they are considered to be safe for domestic pest control purposes, they still have a high toxicity level. Some of these chemicals take longer to break down in the soil, except for pyrethroids that can break down in sunlight in one or two days. Proven 12 Hour Mosquito + Tick Spray and Natrapel Tick & Insect Repellent are pump sprays that are wet and almost spitty at times.

Try peppermint oil

To give your clothing and gear (but not your skin) an added level of protection against ticks, we recommend Sawyer Products Permethrin Fabric Treatment, a formula with 0.5% permethrin. Like the other permethrin repellents we looked at, each application provides about six washings (or six weeks, whichever comes first) of protection. The bottle’s trigger spray is easier to control and apply evenly than others we tried; the 12-ounce size is enough to treat two outfits (shirt, pants, socks). We have more tick advice, including what to do if you find one on you, here.

OFF! Sportsmen Insect Repellent 7 with Picaridin

bug spray for house

Although the 6-ounce bottle is reasonably priced and offers good value, it's not very convenient to carry around in a compact waist bag. This is a minor inconvenience in comparison to the effectiveness and quality of the product. The aerosol spray nozzle has a twist lock feature that keeps it securely closed in your bag. This makes it more portable for taking along on overnight trips or to sporting events. We found that it sprays a lot of product at once, leaving a very wet spot. DEET provides great protection against the serious diseases you can get from ticks, mosquitos, and so on.

Of course, this is a testament to the fact that Natrapel lives up to its claims of being a long-lasting insect repellent. But if you’re sensitive to chemical smells, it’s something to know before you buy. Sawyer Picaridin Insect Repellent smells better than DEET products and is one bottle all family members over 6 months old can use. The brand says one application of the spray should protect you for up to 12 hours against mosquitoes, ticks, biting flies, sand flies, gnats, chiggers, and midges.

Many bugs come with diseases, in particular Lyme Disease in ticks. That's why it's sometimes crucial to not just repel the bugs, but actually kill them. During the testing process, we unboxed each bug spray and applied it as directed, all while documenting the process and taking notes on the texture, absorption, and scent. We re-applied throughout the day and tested each product in a variety of settings. One of our testers has been using this for four consecutive summers now with her family, including spraying her kids' clothes before they go off to camp.

If DIY methods fail to control the pill bug population in your home, consider a professional pest control service. Pest control experts can access specialized treatments and equipment to eliminate pill bugs and prevent future infestations. Taking steps to eliminate standing water and any other issues that are increasing moisture in your home is key if you want to keep bugs out. Several pests are attracted to moisture, including roaches, mosquitoes, termites, and silverfish.

These insecticide dusts are either all-natural, or they contain a powerful synthetic bug killer insecticide. A concentrate is a type of insecticide that comes in liquid or powder form. As the name suggests, these bottles of insect killer contain highly concentrated formulations of insecticide that you mix with water before use. Below, I delve into the array of home insecticides, guiding you through the essential factors to weigh when selecting the right one. This guide provides an understanding of their mechanisms, their effectiveness, and the fundamental principles of application. The 4-ounce bottle is about the size of your hand and would fit into most small bags or backpacks.

There are a few things you can do to get rid of that pesky pesticide smell for good. First, open all the windows and doors in your house to air it out. If the weather is nice, set up some fans to help circulate the air.

We wore it while spending lots of time around stagnant water, and it still passed the test. Insect bites aren’t just unpleasant—they also have some serious health ramifications. Mosquitoes can carry malaria, Zika virus, and West Nile virus while ticks can cause Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and others. Bug repellents prevent both bites from insects and any diseases they may carry. Our experts have also tried Wondercide's Insect Repellant, which uses a similar plant-based formula in a convenient 4-ounce bottle.

Picardin, a synthetic compound, is known for being safe and effective against various biting insects. It also is safe for use on a variety of materials, including synthetics and plastics. DEET also has a reputation for effectiveness and safety when used according to the manufacturer’s directions. However, DEET tends to have a strong odor, and it can’t be used on some materials, like spandex or leather. Active Insect Repellent earns our recommendation as the best option for most situations.

Pill bugs are oval-shaped crustaceans with a segmented exoskeleton about 1/4 to 5/8 inches long. They are gray to dark brown but often have a shiny metallic appearance. This defensive behavior, known as conglobation, protects them from predators and preserves moisture. Pill bugs are often confused with sow bugs, but sow bugs cannot roll into a ball.

Spray around foundations, along window seals, around door frames, and any other places where insects squeeze their way into your home. Some sprays work directly in living spaces, and these spaces are safe to enter once the spray dries.

What's more, it's definitely the best-smelling bug spray on our list. Reliable bug spray is invaluable when on a camping trip or hanging out in your backyard. While general mosquito repellents will keep the little biters away, bug repellent deters ticks, chiggers, mosquitos, and other bugs — along with the diseases they may carry. This product contains 20% DEET as the active ingredient, which will protect against both mosquitoes and ticks. One downside is that you can’t spray it on your clothes for extra coverage.

Once it dries, which takes only a couple of minutes, the odor dissipates to nearly nothing, so this is only a minor gripe, and it’s consistent across all the repellents we tested. As we outlined above, this chemical has the most positives and the fewest negatives of any EPA-approved repellent. We also spoke with the Environmental Protection Agency to learn more about its extensive approval process for repellent chemicals. This process is so thorough that nearly every word on a can or bottle of repellent is under the EPA’s purview. As an EPA spokesperson explained, “As part of the registration process, we review a wide range of data on safety and ecological effects before making a decision on registration. Pyrethrum produces daisy-like flowers in various shades of pink and white.

Keep these away from your pets, though, as they can be quite toxic when ingested. While some species of gnats can bite and sting, the species most commonly found inside the house are more of a nuisance than a danger to humans. "In a recent study, we found that most of the 'flying insects' in homes are fungus gnats," says Dr. Changlu Wang, who works in the Department of Entomology at Rutgers University. He adds that fungus gnats "do not bite people or cause allergic reactions."

Bug spray, still reigns supreme at keeping blood-sucking insects like mosquitos and ticks well away from you and help you avoid the dangerous illness these bugs pass to humans. As a general rule, Hansen says 10% concentrations will give you about 6 hours of protection. Increased concentration correlates with improved time of coverage and protection from a greater variety of bugs. Otherwise, the CDC recommends using the EPA’s search tool to find an insect repellent that contains what you need.

The compound is more popular in Australia and Europe, where it has been available since 1998 and tick-borne illnesses are slightly less common, but DEET remains the staple in the United States. Permethrin, which is what doctors prescribe to patients with lice and scabies, is an odorless solution that works wonders against most any creepy crawly thing this planet might toss at you.

It’s worth noting that the aerosol spray nozzle distributes the product very well, and it has a dry finish that is neither sticky nor greasy. This is especially beneficial when using this DEET-free repellent at the beach, as we did, as it prevents sand or dirt from adhering to your arms and legs. I also like that you can rub them all over your face without worrying about ingestion. Though it isn't a bug spray, Thermacell's E55 Rechargeable Mosquito Repeller is a repellent, so it certainly deserves consideration for this guide.

The trigger spray on the Sawyer’s pump bottle is very even and easy to control. If you prefer, this repellent also comes in an aerosol can, which is great if you’re treating something large—like a tent—so you don’t wear out your index finger. The pump spray also comes in a 24-ounce size for the biggest jobs. All 20% picaridin repellents should provide similar protection, but the Sawyer pump spray stands apart due to a couple of usability features.

Active Insect Repellent as the best option for keeping insects at bay. Its formula is incredibly effective and provides dependable protection against a slew of irritating insects, including mosquitoes, biting flies, gnats, ticks, chiggers, and fleas. All of the products were compared based on important features like how easy it is to apply the repellent, how long it remains effective, and whether it has a perceptible odor. Based on our testing and research, here are the best bug repellents to keep insects at bay. One of the oldest names in bug sprays is still up there with the best. House of Cards Season 2 Review: Episodes 4-6

Fern was rumored to join the cast earlier as a potential love interest for Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood before the star’s own proverbial house of cards collapsed. However, other than the role’s “modified” regular status, no other details have been revealed about Fern’s character. Thus, it will be interesting to see if the previously rumored dynamic sticks, only minus Frank, obviously. Underwood begins a symbiotic, and ultimately sexual, relationship with Zoe Barnes, a young political reporter, secretly feeding her damaging stories about his political rivals to sway public opinion as needed.

Describing Spacey as “predatory” and the set as a “toxic” workplace, the CNN report helped pave the way for Netflix severing all ties with Spacey on Nov. 3, 2017. In addition to removing him from starring or producing in the final season of House of Cards, it also means the streaming service will not release Spacey’s Gore Vidal biopic, which was already in post-production. Rachel Brosnahan had a very limited time on House of Cards compared to other actors on this list, but by all means, she had a great impact on the characters she interacted with. Since leaving the series Brosnahan has starred in various different roles but her most outstanding one to date would be playing the lead role in the series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The lead actress of the series, Robin Wright portrayed Claire Underwood, the wife of Frank Underwood and the first female President of the United States.

Underwood is introduced to Missouri billionaire Raymond Tusk, Walker's friend and advisor. Tusk reveals that he has been influencing Walker's decisions all along and convinced him to cancel the original agreement, and explains he will influence Walker to nominate Underwood for vice president if he does a favor benefiting Tusk's interests. Underwood counter-proposes to Tusk that they work together to fulfill both their interests, which Tusk accepts. Meanwhile, after ending their affair, Zoe begins piecing together clues about Underwood's various plots. The season ends when Underwood accepts the nomination for Vice President of the United States. It is an adaptation of a previous BBC miniseries of the same name by Andrew Davies, which was based on the novel by Michael Dobbs.

Wright was the only cast member to feature in every single episode of House of Cards and was one of the biggest advocates of the series to receive its final season. Since House of Cards, Robin Wright has been featured in the likes of Wonder Women and Justice League as Antiope and has also starred in the Blade Runner sequel, Blade Runner 2049 as Lieutenant Joshi. Sakina Jaffrey was mostly on House of Cards in the show's first two seasons, where she portrayed former United States President Garrett Walker's Chief of Staff, Linda Vasquez, one of the many enemies of Frank Underwood in his rise to power. Meanwhile, Hammerschmidt continues to investigate Zoe's death, and is given information by an unknown leaker within the White House. Major document dumps are made available to Hammerschmidt, which, among other charges, prompts an impeachment hearing against Frank. In response, the Underwoods set up extensive surveillance on all White House personnel.

Meanwhile, he manipulates Peter Russo, a troubled alcoholic congressman from Pennsylvania, into helping him undermine Walker's pick for Secretary of State, Senator Michael Kern. Underwood eventually has Kern replaced with his own choice, Senator Catherine Durant. Underwood also uses Russo in a plot to end a teachers' strike and pass an education bill, which improves Underwood's standing with Walker.

The sixth and final season of House of Cards, an American political drama television series created by Beau Willimon for Netflix, was released on November 2, 2018. Frank Pugliese and Melissa James Gibson returned as showrunners for the final season. The sixth season continues the story of recently-inaugurated, Democratic president Claire Underwood (Robin Wright), who faces new threats within and outside the White House following the death of her husband and former president Frank Underwood. Powerful elites, led by wealthy siblings Annette and Bill Shepherd (Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear), are attempting to manipulate and destroy her presidency, while Claire struggles to exert influence and escape her husband's shadow. House of Cards is a Netflix Original political-drama series based on the British drama of the same name. The series is one of Netflix’s most critically acclaimed but also one of the most controversial in the streaming service’s history.

In the resulting trade war with China, Tusk opposes Walker's efforts to deal with the crisis and begins having a tribal casino funnel money into Republican PACs in retaliation. When Frank discovers that Feng is the source of the donations, he gets Feng to end his partnership with Tusk in exchange for a lucrative contract for a bridge over Long Island Sound. Zoe and two colleagues, Lucas Goodwin and Janine Skorsky, continue investigating Frank and ultimately locate Rachel.

He also starred in six episodes of Preacher but most recently appeared in the drug-related drama series Dependance. For all but the third season of House of Cards, Boris McGiver played Tom Hammerschmidt, the no nonsense editor-in-chief of the Washington Herald newspaper who proved to be a constant thorn in the side of Frank Underwood. After the show wrapped up in 2018, McGiver joined the cast of the CBS supernatural drama series Evil, as well as the ABC legal drama For Life, where he plays the prosecutor who was responsible for putting the show's main character, Aaron Wallace, in prison in the first place.

We’re taking a look back on some of the cast members of House of Cards, and where they are now in 2020. Until being written off after a number of personal controversies all but put a stop to Spacey's career, Frank Underwood was written off the show ahead of the final season in 2017. For the first four seasons of House of Cards Nathan Darrow played United States Capitol Police officer and Frank Underwood's personal security guard Edward Meechum until his character's tragic ending. Besides his tragic death and strange threeway scene with the Underwoods, Meechum was a bright spot of the show in its early days, and provided some great moments. Near the end of his run on the Netflix series, Darrow joined the cast of Gotham where he portrayed Victor Fries, aka Mr. Freeze. Robin Wright's portrayal of Claire Underwood in House of Cards will probably go down as one of the most significant and decorated performances on a television program.

Well, that's what the cast of House of Cards has been up to lately, or at least most of the cast. Some have gone on to find a great deal of success in film and television, others found themselves on the line of succession, and others are finding strange ways to fill their time. If there is someone you think I left off, make sure to let me know in the comments below. Corey Stoll's Peter Russo, a Democratic congressman recovering from severe addiction issues, was one of Frank Underwood's first victims in Season 1 of House of Cards, but he wouldn't be his last. Since his departure from the Netflix series, Stoll has gone on to have a rather successful career in film and television, with appearances in Ant-Man, First Man, and The Strain to name a few. The talented actor will next appear in Steven Spielberg's adaption of West Side Story as well The Many Saints of Newark, the highly-anticipated prequel to the HBO series The Sopranos, which is scheduled to hit theaters in March 2021.

The finished season, which debuts Nov. 2, follows President Claire Underwood as she acclimates to office after her husband’s death, and the portrait it paints of a woman in power is extra appealing to many cast members. An investigative journalist, formerly editor-in-chief of the Washington Herald, and perennial, who is set on bringing Frank underwood down, undeterred by the suspicious deaths of his former colleagues Zoe Barnes and Lucas Goodwin. Campbell played the heroine in Wes Craven's Scream film series, and was in the cast of the 90s teen drama Party of Five. The First lady of the United States, Frank Underwood’s wife and running mate in the 2016 election. The devious democratic politician who became the 46th president of the United States after underhandedly engineering the resignation of his former chief.

Case-Control Study Designs in the Health Sciences LibGuides at Tufts University

case control design

The researcher would find a group of individuals with Kaposi's sarcoma (the cases) and compare them to a group of patients who are similar to the cases in most ways but do not have Kaposi's sarcoma (controls). The researcher might find that those with Kaposi's sarcoma are more likely to have HIV, and thus conclude that HIV may be a risk factor for the development of Kaposi's sarcoma. However, they can be a very efficient way of identifying an association between an exposure and an outcome.

Controls

Case-control studies, due to their typically retrospective nature, can be used to establish a correlation between exposures and outcomes, but cannot establish causation. These studies simply attempt to find correlations between past events and the current state. An odds ratio of less than one implies the disease is less likely with exposure and thus the exposure may be protective. For example, a patient with a prior heart attack taking a daily aspirin has a decreased odds of having another heart attack (odds ratio less than one). An odds ratio of one implies there is no relation between the exposure and the disease process. Case-control studies may prove an association but they do not demonstrate causation.

Enhancing Healthcare Team Outcomes

Care must be taken to be objective in the search for past risk factors, especially since the outcome is already known, or the study may suffer from researcher bias. Although it may not always be possible, it is important to try to mask the outcome from the person who is collecting risk factor information or interviewing patients. Sometimes it will be necessary to interview patients about potential factors (such as history of smoking, diet, use of traditional eye medicines, etc.) in their past. Furthermore, patients who have the outcome (cases) are likely to scrutinize the past, remembering details of negative exposures more clearly than controls. Anything the researcher can do to minimize this type of bias will strengthen the study. Cohort and case–control studies aim to quantitatively estimate the association between a drug exposure and outcome.

Control group selection

Sample size calculations required for statistical significance typically yield far fewer subjects than necessary for enrollment in RCTs,5 which is beneficial in studying uncommon conditions and outcomes. This is because in case-control studies, groups are divided by the outcome presence or absence looking backward for prevalence of exposure, treatment, or risk factors. In cohort studies, on the other hand, groups are divided by exposure, treatment or risk factors, looking forward to frequency of outcomes. Because frequency of outcomes is almost always smaller than prevalence of exposure, treatment, or risk factors, sample sizes in cohort studies are (usually) much larger than those of case-control studies.

For example, in the above mentioned Melanoma and Tanning study, the researchers defined their population as any histologic variety of invasive cutaneous melanoma. However, they added another important criterion – these individuals should have a driver's license or State identity card. This probably is not directly related to the clinic condition, so why did they add this criterion? You would then collect data on your participants’ exposure to contaminated drinking water, focusing on variables such as the source of said water and the duration of exposure, for both groups. You could then compare the two to determine if there is a relationship between drinking water contamination and the risk of developing a gastrointestinal illness.

At $495, the DaVinci Resolve Micro Color Panel is significantly more affordable than its larger counterparts. This opens the door for a wider range of editors and colorists to experience the power of dedicated control panels and take their creative output to the next level. For existing DaVinci Resolve users, the Micro Color Panel offers a familiar feel. The trackballs boast a similar professional design, and the shift keys mimic the layout of higher-end panels.

While most observational studies are qualitative in nature, case-control studies can also be quantitative, and they often are in healthcare settings. Case-control studies can be used for both exploratory and explanatory research, and they are a good choice for studying research topics like disease exposure and health outcomes. Complete and accurate measurement of the outcome of interest is essential to ensure the validity of study results.

LIMITATIONS OF COHORT AND CASE–CONTROL STUDIES

The authors have done a nice job of explaining the fundamental concepts of an underutilized but very useful retrospective study design, the case control study. As they point out, because many neurosurgical conditions are relatively uncommon, and because we are impatient to answer important clinical questions, the sample sizes and duration of prospective cohort studies and randomized trials may be impractical for many neurosurgical questions. Case-control study, in epidemiology, observational (nonexperimental) study design used to ascertain information on differences in suspected exposures and outcomes between individuals with a disease of interest (cases) and comparable individuals who do not have the disease (controls). Analysis yields an odds ratio (OR) that reflects the relative probabilities of exposure in the two populations.

case control design

A comprehensive review of these techniques is beyond the scope of this article, but such reviews may be found elsewhere,25,31–33 Bias and confounding result in spurious drug–outcome associations and are introduced at both the design and analysis stages. Despite the essential difference in these types of scientific inquiry, similar clinical questions can be answered by a well-designed case-control study as illustrated above. This utility gives the case-control study design a unique advantage when studying clinical outcomes in populations affected by rare conditions and diseases. We need well-designed and rigorous cohort and case– control studies because their findings provide knowledge complementary to that garnered from RCTs (Table 1). The design properties of RCTs maximize their ability to estimate the potential causal effects of drugs under ideal circumstances and thereby to estimate the efficacy of those drugs. However, many RCTs involve a relatively limited number of highly selected patients and a limited duration.

Case-control (case-control, case-controlled) studies are beginning to appear more frequently in the neurosurgical literature. They can be more robust, if well designed, than the typical case series or even cohort study to determine or refine treatment algorithms. The purpose of this review is to define and explore the differences between case-control studies and other so-called nonexperimental, quasiexperimental, or observational studies in determining preferred treatments for neurosurgical patients. In a retrospective cohort study, researchers examine a group before any of the subjects have developed the disease, then examine any factors that differed between the individuals who developed the condition and those who did not. The researcher would find a group of individuals with Kaposi's sarcoma (the cases) and compare them to a group of patients who are similar to the cases in most ways but do not have Kaposi's sarcoma (controls). The researcher could then ask about various exposures to see if any exposure is more common in those with Kaposi's sarcoma (the cases) than those without Kaposi's sarcoma (the controls).

As seen in Figure 1, at the time of entry into the study (sampling of participants), some of the study participants have the outcome (cases) and others do not have the outcome (controls). During the study procedures, we will examine the exposure of interest in cases as well as controls. We will then study the association between the exposure and outcome in these study participants. Bias in a case-control study might also result if exposures cannot be measured or recalled equally in both cases and controls. Healthy controls, for example, may not have been seen by a physician for a particular illness or may not remember the details of their illness. Choosing from a population with a disease different from the one of interest but of similar impact or incidence may minimize recall and measurement bias, since affected individuals may be more likely to recall exposures or to have had their information recorded to a level comparable to cases.

We emphasize that identification and estimation are distinct steps in causal inference. Although our focus was on the former, identifying functionals often naturally translate into estimators. The task of finding the estimator with the most appealing statistical properties is not necessarily straightforward, however, and is beyond the scope of this paper. Case-control studies compare groups retrospectively, while longitudinal studies can compare groups either retrospectively or prospectively.

Frank wins back Claire's support by promising not to sabotage her campaign in Texas, but he later publicly endorses Celia in his State of the Union address. Frank and Claire travel to South Carolina for a primary, but a series of scandals causes Frank to narrowly lose the state to Dunbar. Frank discovers that Claire had been leaking information to Dunbar, and she threatens to continue unless he names her as his running mate. Throughout the season, a writer named Thomas Yates is hired by Frank to write a biography for the purpose of promoting America Works. Yates, a fiction writer with a dark past of his own, decides to put a different spin on the book and writes less about Frank and more about his marriage with Claire.

House of Cards season 4

Much like in the previous trailer (immediately below), the tone of the Claire Underwood presidency is prevalent. While it goes without saying that she and her (late) husband, Frank, have left a long trail of blood and personal destruction during their amoral rise, we see the now-president, Claire, trying to obscure those sins behind the façade of feminism. However, it appears that the Underwood chickens will most likely come home to roost in an epic way in this final season. Nine weeks after the unresolved election, the Twelfth Amendment is invoked, with the vote being put up to members of Congress. During a meeting with the Congressional Black Caucus, cracks begin to appear in Conway's façade as he loses his cool. In spite of this, Frank's own baggage and 12% approval rating only allows him a tie with Conway in the House, while Claire manages to secure the Senate vote, becoming Acting President of the United States.

As Durant's testimony proves more threatening, Claire and Jane Davis plot to assassinate her, but she fakes her death and flees the country. Following this, Claire disappears for three weeks, prompting questions of her ability to lead, and leading Usher to plan to use the 25th Amendment to remove her from office. Claire foils Usher's plan and fires her Cabinet, replacing it with an all-female Cabinet, much to Annette's surprise.

Eventually, this and other leaks from his campaign are slowly dripped to the media in a manner that seems unconnected to the Underwoods. Seeing that his candidate is losing, Conway's campaign manager, Mark Usher, switches sides to the Underwoods. The Underwood ticket wins both Ohio and Tennessee, and Frank is sworn in as president and Claire as vice president. Frank and Claire allow the kidnappers to speak to the deposed leader of ICO, Yusuf al Ahmadi, after successfully obtaining the release of two of the hostages. Designers Frank Slesinski and Serena Brosio collaborated on the charming living room in the Gatehouse. “One of the main things we did was add a window seat, which looks like it should always have been here,” Slesinski says. “Our whole goal with this space was basically to turn the lights on in the room, bring in the garden that’s outside, and kind of have an experience of a breath of fresh air,” Brosio says. Cozy Stylish Chic Creative Director Jeanne K. Chung and designers Angela Lee and Caroline Meloche brightened the dark wood-paneled library to create a space where residents can unplug. Wallpaper was added to the ceiling and the backs of the bookcases, and heavy wood blinds were replaced with soft draperies and Roman shades to make the space feel lighter. The firm used a mix of fabrics and wall coverings by Ralph Lauren Home from Designers Guild throughout the space.

An eye-catching natural stone by Walker Zanger was selected for the counters and backsplash, and the space was outfitted with the latest Monogram appliances. Designer Ashleigh Miranda focused on juxtaposing technology and earthy elements in her moody media room. Bursts of hot pink and apple green energize Steven Cordrey’s design for the home’s veranda. Hand-beaded light fixtures illuminate the seating areas, which feature tables and chairs from Janus et Cie’s Amalfi Coast outdoor collection. Hand-painted floors were the jumping-off point for designer Amy Peltier’s soothing primary bedroom design. “It was so much work, but it turned out beautiful.” The firm wanted the space to feel “light and airy and breezy,” and incorporated fabrics and wall coverings by Thibaut in a soft color palette. Peltier and designer Marina Kelly installed an arch to divide the bedroom from the sitting area, breaking up the large space. The designers worked with a color palette of Dunn-Edwards paints, and several chose to highlight the brand’s 2024 Color of the Year, a steely blue called Skipping Stones. Nods to Pasadena’s famous peacocks can be found throughout the designs, and many creators fearlessly brought in statement floors, enveloped their spaces with jewel tones, and added texture to ceilings. Others focused on bringing the beauty of the estate’s gardens and views inside with verdant murals, floral fabrics, and nature-inspired lighting.

The room’s coffered ceilings were enhanced with a faux-wood decorative painting by Jhon Ardilla. “I really feel like the dining room is a forgotten room,” says the designer, who set out to prove how vital the space is to a home. The room is anchored by a Riva 1920 table made with the wood of a 50,000-year-old Kauri tree, which Levine surrounded with seating for 12.

The landmark mansion was built in 1902 by architect Joseph J. Blick for Gertrude Potter Daniels, who paid $15,000 for the shingle-style home. In 1905, Susanna Bransford Emery-Holmes—known as the Silver Queen thanks to the source of her late husband’s fortune—purchased the home and soon made it her own. In 1922, she spent $37,000 to have the Postle Company of Los Angeles, who also built the Pasadena Playhouse, remodel it into an English Tudor Revival–style mansion, giving it the regal exterior that remains today. Packaged ice is also available for emergencies, such as natural disasters, heat waves or power outages.

The trail passes these current and past dwellings, ascending gradually into a wilderness with less and less human impact. Maria Videla-Juniel, who designed the primary bathroom of the main house, also devised a welcoming entry to the Gate House. A Thibault wall covering graces the entry, and a Fibreworks runner leads guests up the stairs. “I’m all about gardens connecting the architecture into the landscape,” landscape architect Timothy John Palcic tells AD PRO. He used a limited palette of chartreuse and dark hues that nod to the brick exterior and arranged benches to create intimate seating areas within the larger English-garden-inspired space. For a bedroom off the nursery, Carmine Sabatella wanted to create a jewel-toned escape.

Normally, the trail crosses to the north side of the canyon and climbs a series of switchbacks to get to Icehouse Saddle. However, when that white thing that is usually foreign to Southern California covers the ground, the consensus becomes to take a direct track right up the center of the canyon. As the Pasadena Showcase House of Design enters its 59th year, it’s returning to a familiar setting.

We also supply ice for construction sites and utility workers as required by California law. Native California wildflowers accent the Arroyo Vista Garden, which was designed with fire safety in mind. Landscape architect Elisa Read Pappaterra filled the center fountain with cascading succulents. Jerome Thiebault created a polished and petite bathroom complete with storage and a shower. Troweled cement plaster was applied to the walls, and handcrafted Zia tile adds pattern to the floor. Below, tour the inspiring rooms and outdoor spaces of the 2024 Pasadena Showcase House of Design.

Icehouse Canyon to Icehouse Saddle in the San Gabriel Mountains

Incense Cedars and firs become the dominant arbors, and 0.8 miles past the junction, the trail crosses a sign marking the boundary of the Cucamonga Wilderness. This is the halfway point by mileage, but in some ways, the hike is just beginning. Designer Lara Hovanessian packed plenty of bold design elements into the powder room and adjacent lounge. A moody House of Hackney floral wall covering lines the dressing area, which leads to a powder room accented with a Kelly Wearstler’s Graffito II from Walnut Wallpaper.

Icehouse Canyon is located in a beautiful stretch of the Angeles National Forest near Mount Baldy Village, just southeast of the mighty Mount Baldy. At 7,500 feet, this low point in the ridgeline offers sweeping views of the western San Gabriel Mountains. From the saddle, hikers and backpackers may continue on in several directions to explore nearby peaks and venture deeper into the Cucamonga Wilderness. The single-track to Icehouse Saddle climbs 2,600 feet over 3.6 miles and is an exceptional hike.

“I wanted you to feel like you were transported to another time and place,” Scheff says. Departing from the parking lot along Icehouse Canyon Road, the trail takes course along the northern bank of a creek that flows down the canyon. Crystal clear water tumbles past oaks and sycamores, and this is a fine venue for a directionless romp through nature for those disinterested in following the trail. A half-dozen cabins are spread out along the bottom of the canyon, along with another half-dozen stone foundations (ruins left over from the early days of the Angeles).

Another seating area with views of the garden was designed for more intimate dining, games, or meetings, and it’s illuminated by a Murano glass chandelier. At the far end of the room, Levine installed a lush purple sofa with cocktail tables, creating the perfect spot for drinks, dessert, or relaxing with a cup of coffee. Maria Videla-Juniel turned the primary bath into a sumptuous retreat with hues of soft blue and brown. Thibaut wall coverings and fabrics were used for the walls and windows, and the elegant shagreen-covered vanities are accented with gleaming fixtures by P.E. Videla-Juniel and project manager Cheryl Hardy also installed a striking shower clad in herringbone stone tile.

Poncho sledding, as it could be called, adds even more enjoyment to this winter hike. Not long after crossing into the Cucamonga Wilderness, the trail begins to climb more seriously. Your heart starts to pound and your thighs start to burn… and then you hit the real steep section, an arduous march up a slippery slope called “the waterfall.” Have a look around for inspiration.

You can arrange to pick up your packaged ice from our Santa Fe Springs warehouse, or we will deliver to your home or business. Planning ahead for events is always recommended, but if that’s not an option, we can deliver anywhere in Los Angeles County or Orange County, usually in 90 minutes or less. On the descent, if you keep an emergency poncho in the bottom of your backpack (for completely different circumstances), you can put it to use as a makeshift toboggan.

“I thought, if somebody’s taking care of the baby, they have a space where they can come and feel like it’s a retreat,” Sabatella says. The designer outfitted a door handcrafted in India with a vintage mirror to create a one of a kind headboard and bathed the space in deep emerald green. The glamorous touches continue in the ensuite bath, where Sabatella added a custom mirror-tiled tub that plays off the vintage French tile floor.

Comments on Icehouse Canyon to Icehouse Saddle in the San Gabriel Mountains

In addition to the trail camps, backpackers may set up camp anywhere they wish in the wilderness as long as the spot is 200 feet from creeks and lakes. Above the snow-covered waterfall, the trail becomes more generous again and there is only one more steep passage over the last third-mile. These tracks are barely visible under the deep snow, and only one trail sign is visible. Designer Stephanie Hatten updated the Gatehouse Kitchen, turning it into an airy English-country-inspired space.

If Icehouse Saddle is your final destination, it is worth the extra effort to hike up the ridge to the north a few hundred feet to get above the trees for a magnificent view of the range to the east and west. The combination of blue skies, white snow, and impressive peaks make for an exception outing. The event draws more than 25,000 guests each year and offers several dining spaces, including Roe Japanese Fusion, the Tudor Rose Bistro, and Wattle & Daub Tavern. The Shops at the Showcase offer an array of merchants, from handmade jewelry to artisanal chocolates, and are also home to the Shops’s Wine & Cheese Bar. One mile from the start, comes a junction with the Chapman Trail, which turns north, passing through Cedar Grove Trail Camp on a more roundabout course to Icehouse Saddle. The Icehouse Canyon Trail continues straight ahead, eventually crossing over to the south side of the creek.

A brick-walled patio became a party-ready outdoor kitchen and dining area thanks to Douglas R. Sanicola of Outdoor Elegance. Sanicola and Monique Wood installed Caesarstone countertops fabricated by Carlito’s Way Stone to create a functional space for outdoor entertaining. Designer Rachel Scheff used the home’s spectacular ceiling, woodwork, and stained glass as the inspirations for her fanciful, flora- and fauna-filled foyer. “It was one of my favorite rooms in the house because it was the one that had the most history preserved, and I wanted to really celebrate that,” she told AD PRO.

Hermogeno and designer Lynette Chin brought in a mix of vintage and new furnishings in the family room, incorporating performance fabrics for durability. “[We made] sure that it was a really usable room, that it didn’t just look nice,” Hermogeno says. An office space in the Gatehouse is now a soothing spa-inspired lounge designed by Margaret Lalikian. The designer referenced the house’s original name, El Robles—Spanish for oak tree—with a tree-filled landscape mural by Arpy Dabbaghian. “For the wall mural, I had to pick something to bring them into nature and a calming environment,” Lalikian says. Samatha Williams’s Tearoom in the Gatehouse is brimming with vintage charm and elegant accents.

Designer Mark Hermogeno paid tribute to Silver Queen Susanna Bransford Emery-Holmes in the kitchen, butler’s pantry, family room, powder room, and mudroom. “We had thought, What if she actually came back to life and asked us to remodel the space? “We wanted to concentrate on polished nickels and polished chromes to get that silver feel back in,” he says of the fixtures, hardware, and lighting by Kohler and Kallista.

Working with Jacqueline Black and Michelle Porreca, Williams brought in a Chinoiserie wall covering to give the space a garden-like atmosphere. A palette of whites, deep blues, and gold creates an elegant atmosphere in the formal living room, which was designed by Rachel Duarte. The designer established two seating areas within the space, including a cozy gathering spot with chaise longues that flank the original carved marble fireplace.
